Iohannis: The fate of the Republic of Moldova must be decided only by its citizens

The fate of the Republic of Moldova must be decided only by its citizens, said President Klaus Iohannis on Monday, who welcomed the vote cast in the referendum for European integration and in the presidential elections in the neighboring country.

„I welcome the vote for European integration in the referendum in the Republic of Moldova and for the popular support expressed in favor of President Maia Sandu and democratic values. The fate of the Republic of Moldova must be decided only by its citizens”, Iohannis wrote on the X platform.

According to the preliminary results centralized by the Central Electoral Commission in Chisinau, a little over 50% of the participants in the referendum – 50.37% – answered „YES” to the question „Do you support amending the Constitution with a view to the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union?”, while 49.63% opposed this initiative.

At the same time, according to the preliminary results presented by the Central Electoral Commission, the acting president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, who is running for a new mandate, supported by the ruling Action and Solidarity Party, received 41.83% of the votes (633,403 votes), while the candidate of the Socialist Party from the Republic of Moldova, Alexandr Stoianoglo, obtained 26.40% (399,740 votes).
