Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Monday that his country will receive $6 billion from Iranian funds frozen in Qatar, as part of the memorandum of understanding signed with the United States to end the war, according to EFE, Agerpres reports.
“Out of a total of $12 billion in Iranian funds in Qatar, $6 billion will be released and repatriated to the country, while efforts are being made to recover the remainder of these funds,” the Iranian president said during a meeting with Ayatollah Musa Shabiri Zanjani in the city of Qom.
Pezeshkian also defended the memorandum signed with the United States as a “great victory for the Iranian people” and noted that Washington had lifted sanctions on the oil and petrochemical industries.
The memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 is under pressure after Iran and the U.S. have exchanged attacks in recent days in their struggle for control of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint for oil trade.
Iran claims it is solely responsible for traffic through the strait and has warned that any attempt to reopen routes not controlled by Tehran “will delay the reopening” of the strait, while Washington opposes this.
According to the American news site Axios, the United States and Iran have agreed to halt the bombings of recent days and to meet this week in Qatar.
