U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the “denuclearization” of Iran and negotiations with the country are progressing well, despite conflicting reports about the new U.S.-Iran talks and recent mutual attacks that have shown just how fragile the ceasefire agreed upon last month is, according to the EFE news agency, as reported by Agerpres.
“The process of denuclearizing Iran is progressing well. We’ve had very good meetings, and we’ll see. We hit them very hard for three nights, as you know, but we get along very well,” Trump said before boarding his new presidential plane donated by Qatar.
The U.S. president insisted on using the word “denuclearization” in his references to the negotiations with Iran. He also insisted that, following the memorandum of understanding agreed upon last month with Iran to cease hostilities, “the stock market is breaking records practically every day” and “the price of oil has dropped significantly,” after peaking following the U.S. and Israel’s launch of the war against Iran in late February.
On the other hand, Trump downplayed accusations that he had grown even richer as a result of this war. “Do you know why I’m making money? Because the stock market is rising. Everyone is making money,” he argued. “So we’re all winning. I’m making money because I have a lot of capital and a lot of cash,” continued Trump, who has earned over a billion dollars from cryptocurrencies in the past year.
His two envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, are in the Qatari capital of Doha for a new round of indirect negotiations with Iran. But while Trump claims that Iran requested a meeting in Qatar, the Iranian government denies this, and Qatar speaks of separate contacts with American and Iranian representatives.
The U.S. and Iran agreed, through a memorandum of understanding signed two weeks ago, to continue negotiations for 60 days to reach a final agreement that would resolve the most contentious issues, particularly Iran’s nuclear program and the sanctions imposed on Iran.
But tensions escalated again this week following Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, followed by U.S. airstrikes against military targets on Iran’s southern coast, to which Iran responded with attacks on U.S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain.
