Jan – Aug arrivals in Romania’s tourist accommodation establishments up 4.8 pct YoY

Arrivals in Romania’s tourist accommodation establishments (rental apartments and rooms included) between January 1 and August 31, 2024 totaled 9.839 million, up 4.8 percent year-over-year, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) said in a release on Friday.

Romanian tourists accounted for 83.8 percent of this figure. Overnight stays in tourist accommodation facilities in the first eight months of the year totaled 21.322 million, by 4.1 percent higher compared to the same period of 2023. Romanian tourists accounted for 84.5 percent, and foreigners for 15.5 percent of this figure. The average length of stay was 2.2 days for Romanian tourists, and 2.1 days for foreigners.

The net occupancy rate for accommodation units in the reporting period was 31.8 percent overall, up 0.3 percent year-over-year.

Of the total number of foreign tourists who checked in with Romanian tourist accommodation establishments in the reporting period, most came from Germany (164,600); Italy (139,900); and Israel (103.700). There were 9,396 million incoming foreign visitors registered at border checkpoints.

Road transportation was the most widely used mode by foreign visitors to come to Romania, making up 81.2 percent of the total arrivals in this period.

As many as 11.429 million departures of Romanians were registered at border checkpoints over January – August 2024, with 72.2 percent of the travelers using road transport and 27 percent air transport.

August arrivals in tourist accommodation establishments (including rental apartments and rooms) totaled 2.172 million, 8.6 percent up year-over-year, with Romanian tourists accounting for 87.2 percent, and foreigners for 12.8 percent of this figure.

Overnight stays in tourist accommodation facilities this August totaled 5.346 million, up 6 percent compared to August 2023, with Romanian tourists accounting for 89.7 percent thereof. The average length of stay in August 2024 was 2.5 days for Romanian visitors and 2 days for foreigners.

The net occupancy rate for accommodation units this August was 46.6 percent overall, by 0.9 percent higher compared to August 2023.

A total of 1.579 million foreign visitor arrivals were registered at Romania’s border checkpoints this August. Visitors from the EU – specifically 398,000 – accounted for 25.2 percent of this figure.

A total of 1.642 million outbound departures by Romanian travelers were registered at border checkpoints in August, with 79.1 percent of the travelers preferring road transport, and 20 percent air transport for their trip.
