Senate President and Chairman of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Nicolae Ciuca said on Friday that the case of the June 13 – 15, 1990 miners’ rampage has not yet been finalized, and the victims and their descendants are still waiting for justice, showing that „this remains an open wound of the Romanian society until the court hands the guilty the punishments they deserve.”
„The miners’ rampage of June 13 – 15, 1990 remains a black page in our recent history. The regime in power back then banned freedom of opinion, suppressing a peaceful protest of the opposition which was manifesting its freedom of expression, won in December 1989. Fomenting enmity among the people, the bogus coup plots and all the manipulation initiated from the top level of the state apparatus generated waves of hatred and violence in society,” Ciuca wrote on Facebook, pointing out that the PNL was „a target of repression” too.
„As an opposition party and an active militant for opinion diversity, the National Liberal Party was a target of repression. Our headquarters and that of the Christian Democratic National Peasant Party were devastated by miners. Yet we remained steadfast, defenders of the rule of law and of an open society,” Nicolae Ciuca wrote.
The PNL leader went on to show that the rampage victims and their descendants are still waiting for justice to be served.
„Unfortunately, the case of the June 13 – 15, 1990 miners’ rampage has not yet been finalized, and the victims and their descendants are still waiting for justice to be served. This remains an open wound of Romanian society until the court hands out the guilty the punishments they deserve,” Ciuca said.
