The Minister of Justice, Radu Marinescu, held a meeting on Friday with the British Ambassador to Bucharest, Giles Matthew Portman, during which recent developments in bilateral judicial cooperation and its future directions were reviewed.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Justice, discussions addressed the strengthening of the legal and operational instruments needed to combat human trafficking and all forms of exploitation, including child abuse, as well as organised crime, ranging from drug trafficking and economic and financial offences to cybercrime and money laundering.
Another important topic concerned easing the workload of the courts. In this regard, both the acceleration of the digitalisation process across the entire judicial system and the identification of legislative solutions, including alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, were considered.
The importance of deepening cooperation in criminal matters and intensifying data exchange through existing mechanisms, in compliance with data protection rules, was also highlighted, alongside issues related to the transfer of sentenced persons and the development of judicial cooperation in civil matters.
‘The Romanian-British relationship in the field of justice is progressing very well, being founded on a solid legal framework consisting of multiple bilateral and multilateral instruments. The constant dialogue in recent years on topics of common interest in judicial matters has facilitated the strengthening of international cooperation and the identification of pragmatic solutions in priority areas. During today’s meeting, both sides expressed their willingness to maintain institutional communication and periodic meetings between experts of the relevant institutions of the two states. The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both parties to maintaining an open dialogue and developing a lasting partnership aimed at protecting citizens’ interests, increasing public confidence in the justice system and strengthening the bilateral legal framework,’ the Ministry of Justice stated.
