Justice minister welcomes approval of bill to set up detox and rehabilitation centers for drug addicts

Justice Minister Alina Gorghiu on Wednesday welcomed the adoption by the Chamber of Deputies of the bill on the establishment of detox and rehabilitation centers for drug addicts.

In a post on her Facebook page, Gorghiu notes that this bill, initiated by the Liberals, is the third one with reference to the fight against drugs and the improvement of legislation in this field, alongside the two laws that are already in force: the Drug Offenders Register and the 2 May Law.

„Today, Parliament also adopted the third bill, which provides for the establishment of regional centers for detoxi and rehabilitation of addicts in each of Romania’s eight development regions: North-East, South-East, South-Muntenia, South-West Oltenia, West, North-West, Center and Bucharest-Ilfov. These centers will operate under the coordination of the Ministry of Health and will be accredited by the National Authority for Quality Management in Health, according to international standards in the field of drug-dependent recovery. This is a necessary step, because the infrastructure for treating drug addiction in Romania is practically non-existent,” said the minister of Justice.

Alina Gorghiu urged all those who need help not to postpone this important step towards recovery.

The plenum of the Chamber of Deputies adopted on Wednesday the draft law on the establishment of detox and rehabilitation centers for drug addicts.

The bill supplements Law No 143/2000 on preventing and combating drug trafficking and illicit drug use and regulates the establishment of detox and rehabilitation centers for drug addicts. These centers include measures for prevention, treatment, prevention of risks and consequences associated with drug use, as well as social reintegration.
