Klaus Iohannis: We don’t need to build walls, but to strengthen EU borders more intelligently

President Klaus Iohannis stated, on Monday, in Luxembourg, that a more intelligent consolidation of the borders of the European Union is needed and that „we must not build walls”, according to Agerpres.

„Recently there have been some heated discussions about EU funding and what to do with it at the external borders. I am one of those who are of the opinion that we should not build walls, but rather strengthen the borders more intelligently, that is, through surveillance with high technology, with well-trained and equipped personnel, with a very efficient flow of information and with good cooperation with neighboring states, but also with the countries of origin of the migrants – I think we must not forget that,” the head of the Romanian stated in a joint press conference with the prime minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel.

Iohannis emphasized that the borders of the Union must be strong enough so that the internal security of the EU can be guaranteed.

„Currently, this means that the one who meets the conditions is allowed to cross the border. But we found out that this is not always the case since 2015, and after that there were repeated discussions on this topic,” Iohannis pointed out.

Moreover, he stated that „Romania does well in the defense and organization of the external border”.

The president of Romania also declared that our country is not on the route of illegal migration.

„Romania is not a country of origin of illegal migration and, to be fair, not a transit country for illegal migration. But the topic concerns us a lot and we are taking measures to permanently improve the external border posts, to strengthen them, to we digitize them and defend the entire external border as best as possible. We are doing this and I think it is very fair that the European Union should contribute appropriately to cover the costs of this border protection,” Klaus Iohannis highlighted.
