The Ministry of Labour and Social Solidarity (MMSS) has successfully completed the hearings procedure for Romania’s accession to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which took place within the organization’s Employment and Social Affairs Committee (ELSAC), the Ministry of Labour informs on Wednesday, through a message on its Facebook page.
Following the analysis of the concrete measures taken by Romania in the field of labour and social solidarity, the ELASC Committee positively assessed the reforms for the development of the labour market, vocational training, social protection and migration-related policies to protect the internal market.
„The Committee highlighted the positive trends on the labour market and social outcomes in recent years and congratulates Romania on the reforms implemented in recent years, as well as on the reforms planned for the future. (…) Considering all this progress, I am pleased to inform you that following the assessment, the ELASC Committee has decided to propose Romania’s accession to the OECD,” said Ilze Zvidrina, chair of the Committee for Employment and Social Affairs, quoted in the Ministry of Labour’s press release.
For her part, the minister of labour, Simona Bucura-Oprescu, underscored that accession to the OECD will bring Romania better employment opportunities, stronger social protection and a more stable economic framework.
„Accession to the OECD marks an important step forward in Romania’s development. It will bring better employment opportunities, stronger social protection and a more stable economic framework. It is a moment that marks Romania’s firm commitment to progress alongside the developed economies of the world,” said Simona Bucura-Oprescu.
According to the same source, by joining the OECD, Romania joins a group of countries that observe the best international practices in the economic and social fields.
Ministry representatives claim that this means significant benefits for all Romanians, including economic stability. „Romania will benefit from well-regulated economic standards and policies, which will lead to sustainable economic growth and the creation of more jobs,” the same press release states.
At the same time, joining the OECD will favour access to international practices. „Implementing the best practices within the OECD will lead to an improvement in the quality of life, ensuring a safer and fairer working environment,” ministry representatives claim.
Another benefit is represented by increased investment. „By adopting transparent and efficient economic policies, Romania will become a more attractive environment for investors, which will generate new opportunities for all citizens,” the document also states.
Also, joining the OECD brings expanded social protection. „Accession will support the development of new social protection measures, aimed at helping vulnerable citizens and reducing social inequalities,” the same source states.
