Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a telephone conversation on Tuesday with his American counterpart, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during which they discussed the international situation and the state of Russian-American relations, according to a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry, as reported by the EFE news agency and cited by Agerpres.
“The foreign ministers ‘synchronized their views’ on the current international situation and Russian-American relations,” the statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Lavrov and Rubio also discussed the schedule for future bilateral contacts, and “the conversation was constructive and professional,” the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
The two ministers have held several discussions over the past two years, the most recent in October 2025, when they were supposed to address preparations for a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Hungary, following a first such summit held last August in Alaska.
But the Budapest summit did not materialize after Trump abandoned the initiative amid a lack of progress in a negotiated resolution of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
