Justice Minister Alina Gorghiu said on Tuesday that convicts fleeing a prison sentence will be handed an additional term behind bars between six months and three years, now that the Constitutional Court ruled that the Fugitives Law is constitutional.
„Good news for the Romanian state, bad news for fugitives! The law providing an extra sentence for fugitives, for absconding the law, is constitutional! This means that a sentence between 6 months and 3 years will be added to their existing punishment. This was the solution proposed by the Justice Ministry and adopted by Parliament. The Romanian state must have sound levers to combat this scourge! In 2023 the Romanian state paid more than RON 10 million for this. This year, as of October 1, we brought 618 fugitives back to the country. Justice must be carried through,” Alina Gorghiu said as cited on the Facebook page of the Ministry of Justice.
The Constitutional Court of Romania rejected on Tuesday the challenge of the High Court of Cassation and Justice regarding the Fugitives Law and ruled by unanimous vote that the regulatory act is constitutional.
