Published on

The Council of the European Union appointed on Tuesday Lucian Romascanu as the member for Romania of the European Court of Auditors, the institution said in a release.

„Mr. Romascanu has served in several public offices in Romania: Minister of Culture, Senator, and most recently, president of the Buzau County Council. Previously he held various management positions in Romania’s private sector. He was appointed to the European Court of Auditors for the period from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2031, replacing Mr. Viorel Stefan. The Council takes these decisions based on the member states’ proposals and after consulting the European Parliament,” the statement said.

It goes on to note that in accordance with the Treaty, the members of the European Court of Auditors are required to perform their duties in complete independence and in the general interest of the European Union.

The European Court of Auditors is the EU’s independent audit institution. Its reports and opinions are a key link in the EU’s accountability chain and are meant to ensure that those responsible for managing the budget and implementing the EU policies are held accountable.
