Luis-Vicențiu Lazarus MEP (NI): Is it in the interest of the European Union and the Commission not to meet these benchmarks, so that the money does not reach Romania?

Published on

During the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg, independent MEP Luis-Vicențiu Lazarus (NI) took the floor and asked, in reference to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) milestones and the political crisis in Romania, “Is it in the interest of the European Union and the Commission that these milestones not be met, so that the money no longer reaches Romania?”

Luis-Vicențiu Lazarus (NI), in Strasbourg: Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, as you know, we are facing an extremely serious political crisis in Romania, and this political crisis has come at the worst possible time, right at the moment when we were supposed to meet the final milestones of the PNRR—milestones that, if we fail to meet, will mean we lose around 10 billion euros. According to my sources, it seems we’ve already lost about 5 billion.

Now, as a former investigative journalist and a seasoned analyst, I can’t help but wonder: could the European Union, through the European Commission, have a hand in this? Because the whole point was that you were offering us this PNRR, with the idea that the country would fare better and the population would prosper.

But all these people who have governed Romania in recent years and who have failed to meet these milestones—they are to blame, not the people. Why should the people suffer for their incompetence? And so, if we have a prime minister who was dismissed by the people’s elected representatives, what is he still doing in office? Why doesn’t he resign, so that another government might come in and meet these milestones?

Or is it in the interest of the European Union and the Commission for these milestones not to be met, so that the money no longer reaches Romania?”
