Man who set fire to room in Palace of Parliament, caught and held for 24 hours

The man who set fire to a room in the Palace of Parliament, Bucharest, was caught on Tuesday night and held for 24 hours.

According to the press office of the Bucharest General Police Directorate (DGPMB), the man in question is to be presented before the magistrates with a proposal of preventive arrest.

He risks imprisonment for up to 7 years for committing the offence of destroying, damaging or rendering unusable a property, committed by arson, explosion or by any other such means and if it is likely to endanger other persons or property.

A man set fire to some goods in his possession, on Tuesday, around 14:00 hrs, at the Palace of Parliament, in the area of a souvenir shop, near the ‘Constantin Brancusi Exhibition Hall, after which he left the scene. It should be noted that access to the area where the event took place is free, in accordance with the Rules of Access to the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, before the security screening area of the SPP. It is also very important to note that the man did not enter the security area inside the building, a Gendarmerie press release said.

Firefighters from the Fire Department of the Palace of the Parliament were dispatched In the affected area to extinguish the fire and evacuation measures were taken.
