The measure to cap the markup for basic food products was approved until March 31, 2026, in Thursday’s Government meeting, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) announced.
In the Government meeting of September 25, 2025, the extension of the cap on the markup for certain agri-food products was approved until March 31, 2026. By amending the Government Emergency Ordinance (GEO) no. 67/2023, access to basic food products for all Romanians – especially those with low incomes – is maintained, protecting the final consumer and supporting social equity. The measure contributes both to stabilizing prices and increasing purchasing power, as well as to stimulating sales and promoting social inclusion,” the release mentioned.
According to the quoted source, this decision targets all actors in the agri-food chain – processors, distributors, and retailers – but, in particular, protects the most vulnerable consumers, in line with the principles of the European Pillar of Social Rights.
The MADR mentions the stages of implementing the measure. Thus, in July 2023, through GEO 67/2023, the cap on commercial markups was introduced for a period of 90 days. Subsequently, the deadline was extended successively through several emergency ordinances, the latest of which (GEO 34/2025) being valid until September 30, 2025.
The act approved today extends the deadline until March 31, 2026, the quoted source mentioned. AGERPRES
