Meeting between Ilie Bolojan and Viktor Orbán, good and constructive, says UDMR leader

Chairperson of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor stated on Thursday in Miercurea-Ciuc that the meeting between Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban was „very good and constructive,” with discussions focusing primarily on strengthening Romanian-Hungarian relations.

„It was a very good and constructive meeting, the first between Mr. Bolojan, in his capacity as prime minister, and Prime Minister Orban, although they had previously met when Mr. Bolojan served as interim President at Cotroceni [Presidential Palace]. First of all, I would like to stress that it is absolutely normal for the Hungarian prime minister, during a multi-day visit to Romania, to meet – even informally – with the Romanian prime minister. And this meeting was arranged within just a few hours, which reflects the European and regional norm,” Kelemen Hunor said.

He added that the talks centered on Romanian-Hungarian relations, which need strengthening, especially in economic areas. „There is much work to be done, particularly because there is a large trade deficit in Hungary’s favor and to Romania’s disadvantage, the balance is significantly skewed. There are sectors, such as agriculture, food processing, and energy, where much deeper cooperation is possible. This collaboration must become a priority,” he emphasized.

UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor mentioned that the two leaders also discussed the current situation in both Romania and Hungary and expressed surprise at the way the topics were addressed during the meeting.

„They discussed, of course, the situation we are in, the situation Hungary is in, what experiences each country had when facing high deficits or public debt issues, absolutely normal topics for such a bilateral and informal meeting. I was surprised by how relaxed both of them were and how correctly they addressed all the subjects, in a conversation that lasted nearly two hours,” Kelemen said.

Kelemen Hunor added that Viktor Orban invited Ilie Bolojan to Budapest, with the details to be finalized in the coming period.

The UDMR president participated Thursday morning in Miercurea-Ciuc in an event marking the handover of 16 electric school minibuses, purchased through the NRRP, organized by the Harghita County Council.
