The digital sector contributes almost 8% to Romania’s Gross Domestic Product, but will quickly reach 10%, with the potential being much higher, says MEP Victor Negrescu.
According to IMM Romania, Romania’s representatives met in the European Parliament at the Romanian Digital Day 2025, held in Brussels on March 18, at the initiative of the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Victor Negrescu.
In this edition, the focus was on Romania’s active involvement, through its cities that are increasingly asserting themselves as innovation hubs in the region, contributing to shaping the continent’s digital future.
„If we don’t act now, we will lose ground to the tech giants on other continents. Europe must become a pole of digital innovation, not just a consumer of technology produced in other parts of the world. Only through a joint and coordinated effort can we transform Europe into a global leader in the digital field. It is our responsibility to ensure that no citizen and no region is left behind in this transition. Romania has all the ingredients to be the digital tiger of Europe. Today the digital sector contributes almost 8% of Romania’s GDP, but it will quickly reach 10%, and the potential is much higher. However, we are witnessing an important transformation of the digital industry from outsourcing to the creation of services and products. European funds can speed up this development,” Negrescu is quoted as saying in a press statement.
In his opinion, Romanian Digital Day has become a platform to showcase these challenges and present Romanian solutions for Europe’s digital transformation.
„The more than 200 leaders in the field of digital transformation, representing 1% of Romania’s GDP, who participated in the event demonstrate once again that Romania has all the ingredients to be the digital tiger of Europe,” Negrescu said.
In a period marked by rapid economic and digital transformations, Europe’s competitiveness is becoming a priority – that was the idea from which the discussions and exchanges of ideas started. The European Union aims to strengthen digital skills, strategic autonomy and technological leadership, and discussions on a new competitiveness fund are already underway.
The entire day was structured around thematic discussions that addressed multiple aspects of digital transformation. The participants analysed the ways in which technology can be harnessed to increase economic competitiveness, support the growth of startups and reduce digital gaps between European regions
The event brought together leaders from all regions of Romania in the field of digital transformation, major players in the industry, with the main topics being increasing competitiveness through edu-tech and the development of European technology hubs, EU digital policies and the impact on the technological ecosystem and Romania’s role in promoting innovation and European digital leadership.
Florin Duma, chairman of IMM Romania, pointed out the need for digital education. „Let me reiterate the crucial importance of digital education for the success of Romanian entrepreneurship and Romania’s effective integration with the global digital economy. Romania must actively contribute at European level, boosting the modernisation of SMEs through digital solutions, training specialists and attracting European funds.”
Also discussed at the event was the importance of investing in emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and cybersecurity.
