Social Democratic Party (PSD) MEP Victor Negrescu on Thursday announced the adoption by the European Parliament’s Committee on Budgets of the amendment he proposed on putting into operation the Black Sea Maritime Security Hub.

„Hosting the Black Sea Maritime Security Hub must be a strategic priority for Romania in the current security context. Today we have taken a new concrete step. The European Parliament’s Committee on Budgets has adopted the amendment I proposed through which the European legislature calls for this hub to be made operational in its position on the annual European budget. In fact, since last year I have initiated actions for this initiative: I have discussed it with European officials, submitted requests and built support for the idea that the European Union should develop this regional maritime security hub in Romania. The European Parliament has already highlighted, thanks to my amendments, in the budgetary resolutions for 2026 and 2027 the need to create the Black Sea Maritime Security Hub,” Negrescu wrote on Facebook.

According to him, the centre would allow real-time monitoring of the maritime area, strengthen early warning capacity and support responses to new threats, including sea mines or the activities of the Russian ghost fleet.

„For Romania, this project means security, including for investments in the energy sector, strategic relevance and investments in infrastructure and technology, such as those in the port sector. We will continue our efforts for the Black Sea Maritime Security Hub to become a reality in Romania. According to the information I have, a positive decision is likely to be announced in the coming months, to be rapidly put into operation,” the Social Democratic Party MEP pointed out.
