A Turkish and a Romanian driver are under criminal investigation after allegedly hiding in lorries in which they were transporting fruit, vegetables and yogurt, migrants from Sri Lanka and Syria bound for Italy and Norway.

The two lorries were checked at the exit from the country at the Nadlac I border crossing, the western Arad Border Police informed on Monday.

„A Romanian and a Turkish citizen showed up for customs clearance on the way out of Romania, at the wheel of vehicles registered in Romania and Turkey. According to the cargo manifests, the drivers were shipping fruit, vegetables and yogurt for companies in Italy and Norway. A thorough control of the vehicles resulted in five foreign citizens being found, three of them hidden in the storage box located under the semi-trailer, and the other two in the space intended for the driver’s rest in the tractor head cabin,” according to the Arad Border Police.

The migrants are from Sri Lanka and Syria, aged between 22 and 31 years.

The two drivers are being investigated for migrant smuggling, and the migrants for attempting to illegally cross the state border.
