Moldovan Ambassador Chirila: Russia repealing foreign policy decree does not cancel basic treaty

Published on

The repeal of the 2012 decree on the foreign policy of the Russian Federation underpinning Moldova’s sovereignty over the Transnistria issue does not cancel the basic treaty signed by Moldova and the Russian Federation in November 2001, Moldova’s ambassador in Bucharest Victor Chirila told Agerpres.

He added that under Article 1 of that treaty, Russia has committed to respecting the inviolability of borders, territorial integrity, political independence, peaceful conflict resolution, and non-interference with domestic affairs.

„Moldova has taken note of the the Russian Federation’s decision to repeal its 2012 foreign policy decree. We understand that the approval and publication of a new concept of Russia’s foreign policy will follow, which we will examine carefully in Moldova. The position of the Republic of Moldova on the Transnistria settlement remains, however, the same, focused on a peaceful conflict resolution by diplomatic and political means,’ added Chirila.

He went on to say that Moldova will continue to ask the Russian Federation to comply with its international commitments to unconditional withdrawal of its military forces illegally stationed on Moldova’s soil.
