The parliamentary elections this September in the Republic of Moldova will represent a decisive moment for the country’s European path, and it is essential that Romania reaffirms its firm and unequivocal support for Moldova’s accession to the European Union, Chamber of Deputies Speaker Sorin Grindeanu said on Wednesday.
‘Today we mark 34 years since the proclamation of the Republic of Moldova’s independence, in an international context marked by profound changes in the global security architecture. The parliamentary elections in September will be a decisive moment for the Republic of Moldova’s European journey, as well as a test of its determination to speed up the EU accession process. Therefore, it is essential to reaffirm our firm and unequivocal support for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union,’ Grindeanu wrote on Facebook.
He noted that, beyond its historical significance, Moldova’s entry into the large European family represents ‘an essential step for strengthening stability on the Eastern Flank.’
‘I support the immediate opening of negotiation chapters with the EU and believe that Romania’s experience can and must be harnessed during the accession process. In this context, continuing the major infrastructure projects in Moldova is an additional argument for the ability to strengthen direct links between the two states, as well as between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union,’ the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies further said.
According to him, Romania must also capitalise on efforts that will strengthen its economic presence in the Republic of Moldova.
‘I believe that a firm, pragmatic approach, based on in-depth knowledge of the realities in this region, is the most effective way we can contribute to making the Republic of Moldova’s European path irreversible,’ Sorin Grindeanu concluded.
