he earthquake that occurred on Monday afternoon, with a magnitude of 5.4 on Richter scale, is part of the normal seismic activity of the Vrancea area, where such an earthquake can occur every two years, Constantin Ionescu, general director of the National Research and Development Institute for Earth Physics (INFP), told.
„The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.4 and the intensity in the epicenter of V. It occurred at a depth of 126 kilometers, with 100 stations included in the localization. It was also felt in Bucharest, it was much more strongly felt in Moldova, in Chisinau. The earthquake is part of the normal seismic activity of the Vrancea area, where at least once every two years there is an earthquake with a magnitude above 5. We had a larger one in 2018, of 5.8, one of 5, 4 in 2022. For now, there is no aftershock. If there had been aftershocks, they should have been produced by now,” said Ionescu.
He stated that the latest review of the magnitude of the earthquake at 5.4 was close to what the alert system initially showed in the first three seconds, namely 5.5. He added that from the analyzes carried out by specialists show that once a century an earthquake with a higher magnitude, even above 7, can occur in the Vrancea area.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 occurred on Monday, at 17:40, in Buzau county, Vrancea seismic zone, at a depth of 126.8 kilometers, near the cities: 56 km northwest of Buzau, 58 km southeast from Sfantu-Gheorghe, 59 km east of Brasov, 67 km west of Focsani, 69 km north of Ploiesti and 97 km northeast of Targoviste.
