More than 730,000 saplings from 100-plus species were planted in 2022 under the national volunteer afforestation initiative Planting Good Deeds in Romania, the organizers said in a release. 165 hectares of land in 40 localities have been planted with tree species picked by forestry engineers so as to best adapt to the specific local conditions – on either rural degraded lands, or in the urban environment, where mini-forests and street tree linings were set up, write Agerpres.
Both volunteers and day laborers worked to plant saplings on behalf of the companies that sponsored the campaign
„The year 2022 was an intense and rewarding one. Together with my colleagues, I visited dozens of plantations installed since the start of the initiative, constantly monitoring them and performing maintenance and/or addition works where necessary. As I like to say: it’s just like in the life of a parent! You bring a child into the world and you make sure that they attend all education school, from preparatory to university. It’s the same with our young forests. We don’t plant them and come back to them just 10 years later. We visit them several times a year and help them grow, when they need it. Help consists of clearing, mobilizing the soil, spraying against aphids or mealybugs, tree additions and others,” declared Mihai Enescu, forestry engineer with the initiative Planting Good Deeds in Romania.
The Planting Good Deeds in Romania nursery started producing saplings, also taking on a didactic role and complementing planting actions organized in schools.
