More than half of Romanians prefer central heating for their homes (survey)

Published on

Gas central heating is the main source of heating in Romanian homes, with almost 58% of participants in a sociological survey indicating that they use such equipment, while more than 16% are connected to central heating systems and 15.6% depend on wood stoves in the cold season.

Less than 1% of respondents use heat pumps.

These are some of the conclusions of a sociological research conducted for the despre-energie.ro platform, a project supported by Delgaz Grid and E.ON companies.

In more than 26% of households, heating systems are between 5 and 10 years old, with a similar proportion of participants in the study stating that the heating devices in their homes are between 10 and 20 years old. More than 86% of gas central heating systems are installed in urban homes and only 13.6% in rural areas.

Hoping to keep their bills under control, many Romanians have decided, during the cold season, to reduce the running time of the heating boiler, with more than 36% saying that they run it between 2 and 5 hours a day, and almost 29% between 6 and 9 hours a day. Just over 13% of those surveyed let the boiler run for more than 15 hours a day.

On the other hand, almost 20% of Romanians admit that, in order to improve the thermal comfort in their household, they use additional heating systems, such as electric radiators (indicated by 41.7% of respondents) or fan heaters (37.9%).

The Despre-energie.ro platform, a project supported by E.ON and Delgaz Grid, was launched in 2020 with the aim of becoming one of the main sources of information for electricity and gas consumers and, at the same time, of explaining, in clear and accessible language, relevant and impactful developments on the energy market.

The sociological research was conducted by Sondaje Marketing Relatii Publice SRL between 10 and 18 January 2024, on a sample of 1,053 online users, with a margin of error of +/-3%, being considered representative of the adult population of Romania, but assuming the limitations of the online survey.
