Nazare on increasing pensions: The coalition has decided to freeze revenues for 2026

Published on

The ruling coalition has decided, through package I, to freeze revenues for 2026 at certain levels, Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare said on Tuesday at a specialist conference.

He was asked by journalists if state pensions will increase in 2026 or if the minimum wage will increase.

„We have not discussed these subjects. I know that they were not discussed in the coalition either. There was no discussion on such a topic, but this coalition under package one and even after package one made some decisions related to freezing revenues for 2026 at certain levels, all decisions that we have sent to Brussels through package I. These commitments exist and, from my point of view, once we have taken them in the coalition, they must be observed in 2026,” said Nazare.

He was also asked if there is an analysis on the effects of the fiscal measures on the public.

„I fully understand that there are a lot of people upset because we are not going through a good economic situation, but I have great confidence, you know, that by the end of this year and in 2026 the economy will recover. I am very optimistic that Romania’s economy will recover. These measures that we have taken were necessary measures. If we hadn’t taken them at that time, we would most likely have lost the investment rating, and the effects on the economy would have been devastating and implicitly on the public. Because the effects were much greater if we lost the rating, on inflation, including potentially a depreciation of the exchange rate. So, there were things that would have affected the public much more than the effects we are experiencing today, and I ask them to be patient and to trust that this government to take the measures to lay the foundations for a future recovery. Without these foundations, a rebound of the economy was not possible because we did not have the confidence of the markets, we did not have enough confidence from the financiers to continue and rebuild the economy, which as you can see, has a very low growth rate. Last year it was 0.8%. This year it is still small. So, we need to think about a different attitude regarding economic growth.”

Nazare on Tuesday participated in the conference „Budget and taxation 2026: The effects of taxation and the expectations of the economy”, organised by CursDeGuvernare. AGERPRES
