President Nicusor Dan called on Wednesday on the relevant authorities to treat each case of domestic violence with the utmost seriousness, noting that he will collaborate with the future Government to build a package of concrete measures that will ensure the real protection of victims and the prevention of gender-based violence.
„Romania is facing a worrying level of violence against women. In the first six months of this year alone, 26 women lost their lives, most of them as a result of attacks committed by former or current partners. Last year, over 130,000 cases of domestic violence were reported. The pain and outrage felt by society are entirely justified. I firmly condemn any form of violence against women and reaffirm that it cannot be tolerated, ignored or treated superficially,” Nicusor Dan wrote on Facebook.
He expressed his full solidarity with the participants in the protest on Wednesday evening in Victoriei Square.
„This evening, in Victoriei Square, civil society is demanding urgent and effective measures to stop violence against women. I convey my full solidarity to all participants in the protest. It is essential that the voices of victims be heard, and that public policies be built based on the painful realities they face every day,” the head of state also wrote.
The president made a firm appeal to the authorities with responsibilities in enforcing the law – police officers, prosecutors, judges – to treat each case of domestic violence with the utmost seriousness.
„Too many alarm signals have been ignored. It is imperative that victims be believed and protected, and abusive behaviors be stopped before they turn into tragedies,” Nicusor Dan emphasized.
