President Nicușor Dan said in New York on Tuesday that discussions about a possible PSD-AUR government were premature at this point. The head of state said that Romania was in a 10-day period during which attention had to be focused on forming the government led by prime minister-designate Siegfried Mureșan, reports cotidianulhd.ro.
Asked about a statement by PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu that a PSD-AUR government by 2028 could not be ruled out, Nicușor Dan said that the current procedure had to be completed first.
“We are in a 10-day period in which, in my view, we should focus solely on the question of whether this nomination will succeed. If it turns out not to succeed, there are not just two options. Even PSD and AUR together do not have a majority,” the president said.
Nicușor Dan noted that, if the Mureșan government failed to secure Parliament’s vote, several scenarios could be considered.
Asked about the alternatives for forming a new government, the president replied: “A technocratic government, a rotating arrangement and all that you know.”
The head of state declined to elaborate on the scenarios for the period following a possible failure by the prime minister-designate. He said that the first step was to wait for the outcome of the ongoing process.
“Let’s see this process we are in through to the end. I hope it succeeds. I said from the outset that it would be difficult and, if it does not succeed, we will then have all the discussions again, considering all the possibilities,” Nicușor Dan added.
Siegfried Mureșan has 10 days, beginning with the publication of the decree designating him in the Official Gazette, to request Parliament’s vote of confidence on the government programme and the list of ministers.
