President Nicușor Dan stated on Friday that he had been informed of the explosion of a marine drone in the Port of Constanța, an incident he described as the second major security incident to occur this week along the Romanian coast.
‘On my way to Montenegro, I was informed of the explosion of a marine drone in the Port of Constanța. Law enforcement and security agencies acted promptly and evacuated the area as a precaution before the explosion, and so far there are no indications that there were any casualties. The priority has been and remains the protection of human life and the security of port infrastructure,” the head of state wrote on Facebook while traveling to the EU–Western Balkans Summit.
Nicușor Dan says that the circumstances under which the drone entered the port and any potential additional risks are currently being analyzed. Further information will be provided by the responsible agencies as the investigation progresses.
‘This is the second significant security incident this week on the Romanian coast, following the discovery of a sea mine between Vama Veche and 2 Mai, which comes on top of the incident in Galați. With a military conflict at the border, it is clear that the security environment we find ourselves in is a sensitive one, which is why we will maintain a high level of vigilance. Such particularly serious situations are the direct consequences of the war of aggression launched by Russia against Ukraine,” the head of state added.
As a NATO member state and a country bordering the Black Sea, Romania will take all necessary measures to protect its citizens, critical infrastructure, and national interests, the president stated, according to Agerpres.
