Nordis property development fraud case/JusMin Marinescu: Justice must be done, I cannot comment on individual responsibilities

Published on

Justice Minister Radu Marinescu said on Wednesday that he cannot comment on the individual responsibilities of the persons involved in the Nordis property development fraud case, stressing that justice must be served to the end.

„As minister of justice, my main obligation is to ensure that the act of justice remains independent, impartial and objective. In my capacity as minister of justice, I cannot make any comments regarding the legal responsibility of a specific person. (…) Justice must be done to the end, the truth must be found. The essence is that everyone guilty must answer before a court of law. I repeat, I cannot comment on individual responsibilities. I trust the judiciary. If someone made a mistake, that person shall be held accountable, but in a democratic society this must happen before the competent bodies,” the minister said in Parliament.

Asked whether the credibility of Parliament has been affected, given that former head of the Chamber of Deputies’ Law Committee Laura Vicol faces heavy accusations in this case, Marinescu replied: „I know that there is an investigation underway. I can only hope that the judicial authorities conduct this investigation promptly, fairly and objectively, that the truth will come to light and that the persons responsible are held accountable, but as far as Mrs. Vicol’s political activity is concerned, I have nothing to comment at the moment. I have no knowledge of whether, while exercising her mandate, certain aspects would have cast a negative light on her parliamentary activity, which must be dissociated from her possible liability in a criminal trial. (…) For the Romanian society, it is certainly desirable that competent, valuable, and honest people accede to public office. I do not wish to make any comment on the manner in which Mrs. Vicol was selected, because I personally am unaware of these aspects and I have nothing to tell you. As a principle, yes: society needs correct politicians,” Radu Marinescu said.

He emphasized that, in his capacity as justice minister, he will never interfere with an investigation.
