In a social media post, Oana Gheorghiu accuses “extremist” political figures, including MPs, of infiltrating the shepherds’ protest in Victory Square. The dismissed deputy prime minister says that peaceful protest is a fundamental right in a democracy, but condemns the violent incidents that took place outside the Government building, writes gandul.ro.
In a Facebook post, Gheorghiu says that her experience of protesting against corruption has strengthened her conviction that peaceful demonstrations play an essential role in a democratic society.
“People have every right to protest peacefully for whatever reasons they consider legitimate. As someone who spent many days and nights protesting outside Victoria Palace against corruption, I firmly believe that peaceful protest is an essential pillar of our democracy,” Oana Gheorghiu wrote on Facebook.
She maintains that Romania is still close to our European values precisely because honest people took to the streets to defend democracy.
“Romania is still close to our European values today precisely because honest people took to the streets to defend democracy”.
The dismissed deputy prime minister’s message then turns to the extremist politicians and MPs who infiltrated the shepherds’ protest and tried to change the nature of the demonstration. She stresses that the “extremists’” aim was to incite violence in order to cause chaos.
“By contrast, I have a simple and direct message for the extremist politicians, including MPs, who infiltrated the shepherds’ legitimate action today, trying to distort its purpose, incite violence and cause chaos: Shame on you! You are entirely to blame for today’s violence”.
