Outgoing coach Iordanescu: I invested my best as a person and as a coach in the national team

In a message to his Romanian fans upon leaving as coach of Romania’s national football team, Edward Iordanescu said that while he was at the helm of the team he invested his best as a man and as a coach in it.

„Dear Romanian supporters, I started with total confidence on a path that seemed impossible for most and I wholeheartedly took up this mission in which I invested my best as a person and as a coach. We have built a high-performance team that is worthy of Romania’s tradition and reputation, and I am proud to have had the chance to work alongside footballers with an extraordinary character and great potential. We lived together moments for history, loaded with incredible emotions. I was happy and honoured that we can produce happiness for millions of Romanians. I am convinced that through the sacrifice of these wonderful boys we have inspired and will inspire generations, and our children will grow up having Romanian models to follow,” Iordanescu wrote in a social media post.

„But it was not always a road of celebration, as there were also sacrifices. And what I did doesn’t matter. But for what my family has done, I am compelled to keep my promise now. Because I promised that we will qualify for the EURO. And we did.”

Iordanescu added that he did not extend his contract with the Romanian Football Federation because he had promised to dedicate more time to his family.

„But, at the same time, I promised my family, in the difficult moments I went through during this journey – when they suffered and supported me above all – that I would also fulfill my duty to them, after I fully did my duty to the national team and to Romania. Now is the time to keep my word to my family. My mission as coach of the national team is over. The Soul Generation has come to know its own way. We built it together, we brought principles and values that cannot disappear overnight, we consolidated together a discipline of work, a fighting spirit and a mentality that will endure.”

Iordanescu also said that he leaves the national team reconciled because he kept his word regarding the promises when he took over as coach.

The Romanian Football Federation announced on Monday, on its official website, the end of its collaboration with coach Edward Iordanescu, after extending the contract expiring at the end of this month was no longer possible as the two parties failed to reach agreement.
