Over 965,000 non-resident tourists stayed in Romania in the first half of this year, and their total spending amounted to 3 billion lei, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Thursday.
On average, a non-resident tourist spent 3,100 lei in Romania in the first half of this year.
Business trips were the main reason for 55.7% of non-resident tourists who arrived in Romania between January and June, accounting for 58.6% of the total expenditure.
More than 44% of non-resident tourists arrived in Romania for private purposes, accounting for 41.4% of total expenditure.
In the second quarter, the total number of non-resident tourists accommodated in collective tourist accommodation structures was 586,300 and their expenditures amounted to 1.85 billion lei (on average 3156.9 lei/person).
Of the non-resident tourists who arrived in Romania in the second quarter of 2024, 53.6% traveled for business purposes, their expenditures accounting for 57.2% of the total expenditures. Of the total business spending in the second quarter, the main share was spent on accommodation (52%), followed by expenditure in restaurants and bars (16.9%) and shopping (14%).
Private tourists accounted for 46.4% of the total, their expenditure representing 42.8% of total expenditure. Spending on accommodation accounted for 43.6% of total spending, followed by spending on shopping (15.3%) and spending in restaurants and bars (15.1%).
