The standing bureaus of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate took note, on Tuesday, of the proposal from the Ombudswoman for the office of Deputy Ombudsman in the field of activity regarding the prevention of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading punishments or treatments in places of detention, write Agerpres.

Thus, Ionel Nicolae was proposed, for a five-year term, to become the Deputy Ombudsman in the field of activity „family rights, young people, pensioners, disabled people,” from April 17, 2018 to April 18, 2023.

In the request, the Ombudsman points out that the office of Deputy Ombudsman for which she made the proposal is vacant and „needs a coordinator to organize and implement the provisions of domestic legislation and international conventions in the matter.”

The request was sent to the legal committees of the two Chambers, for the report.

In May, the standing bureaus of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate analyzed a letter by which the Ombudswoman, Renate Weber, requested the dismissal from office of Daniel Iovanescu, Deputy Ombudsman in the field of prevention of torture and other cruel, inhuman punishments or treatments or degrading. He was appointed in October 2022, for a 5-year term.

„The constant attitude of Mr. Deputy Daniel Iovanescu makes collaboration between the Ombudswoman and him impossible, with the consequence of dysfunctionalities in the activity of the institution,” Renate Weber wrote then, among other things.
