Parliamentary elections Moldova/MEP Negrescu: Victory of pro-European parties a strong signal for EU accession

Published on

The victory of the pro-European parties in the Republic of Moldova is a strong signal for accession to the European Union, and the Council must immediately approve the start of negotiations on chapters, Romanian PSD (Social Democratic Party) MEP Victor Negrescu, Vice President of the European Parliament, stated on Monday.

”Moldovan citizens have sent a clear message: they want a European future. The results show that, despite the challenges and manipulation campaigns carried out with the aim of destabilising the electoral process, the pro-European forces emerged victorious. This victory is one of the values: democracy, rule of law, transparency and European solidarity,” Negrescu wrote on Facebook.

According to him, the Republic of Moldova and, in particular, President Maia Sandu, have given a lesson in democracy and resilience to the Western world.

„But this success also comes with responsibilities: it is time to deliver reforms, to strengthen institutions and to show that Europe is not just an ideal, but a concrete project, with tangible results for citizens. As Vice-President of the European Parliament responsible for the relation with the Republic of Moldova, I assure the European legislature of my full support. Europe and Romania are winning, and the Republic of Moldova is moving towards a common future with the European Union. By the end of 2028, accession negotiations with the European Union can be completed,” Negrescu said.

The pro-Europeans from the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) collected more than 50% of the votes in the parliamentary elections held on Sunday in the Republic of Moldova, according to the preliminary data presented by the Central Electoral Commission. On Monday morning, at 8:00 am, data from 99.60% of all polling stations were centralized.

PAS, currently in power, was voted for by 50.05% of thevoters, while the main left-wing party, „Patriotic Bloc” (Patriotic Electoral Bloc of Socialists, Communists, Heart and Future of Moldova), obtained 24.25% of the votes.
