Participation in voting is essential, says the Central Electoral Bureau president

Voting is essential, and renouncing the exercise of this constitutional right would not have any kind of beneficial effect, but would only reduce the capacity of the community to impose its own will, the president of the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC), judge Vasile Bicu said on Friday in a message on the occasion of the local elections and for the European Parliament, which will take place on June 9.

„Dear Romanians, voters from the country and from abroad, only a few days separate us from the date of June 9, which, this year, has acquired special importance for us, being the day when we elect those who will take care of the development of our communities at the local and county level, as well as those who will ensure the defense and promotion of Romanians’ interests in the European Parliament. Voting day should be viewed and treated by each of us as a day of celebration, this day being, in essence, the celebration of democracy. On this occasion, the fundamental human rights are celebrated: the right to free expression, the right to be elected and the right to elect,” the president of BEC says in the message.

The judge said that the right to elect represents the affirmation of one’s will on the future of the communities, adding that „voting is the expression of respect and concern for children, parents, siblings, neighbors and other fellows”.

Vasile Bicu emphasized that „hate speech, aggression, discrimination and manipulation of public opinion only generate division and instability, while balance, stability and constructive dialogue develop societies in which well-being and respect for the needs and freedoms of others prevail”.

„Only cooperation leads to peace, harmony and prosperity, and without it the democratic and moral values of our society would not have existed. It is important that each of us elect in full knowledge of the cause and opt for those candidates who really listen and will pay attention to what our needs and aspirations are and who propose concrete, coherent and correct solutions to the problems that concern us,” said judge Vasile Bicu.

According to him, even if, at certain moments, justified expectations and hopes were not fulfilled, „renouncing the exercise of the constitutional right to vote would not have any kind of beneficial effect, but would only reduce the capacity of the community to impose its own will „.

He also said that each vote entered in the ballot box is „a step towards a better, fairer and more prosperous future”.
