The governments of Spain and Romania intend to start working towards obtaining dual citizenship and this is „an extraordinary, extremely important political message”, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said, according to Agerpres.
Sanchez mentioned, in a joint press conference with Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca, that in Europe only France and Portugal have agreements on dual citizenship with Spain.
„I would like to emphasize the fact that when this happens, and it will certainly happen, Romania will be the third country in Europe with which we have this type of alliance and this type of recognition. I think it is very important to let the ministries work in this direction. A working group will be formed with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Internal Affairs and after that we will develop this idea. But I believe that the message we are sending, of recognition and commitment, at least on the part of the Spanish Government, of recognition of the Romanian community’s contribution in our country, I think this message is extraordinary and I want to thank the Romanians who live among us and obviously this is also related to our commitment, but also to the commitment of the Romanian Prime Minister that this should be the beginning of a positive relationship for both countries,” said the Spanish Prime Minister, according to the official translation.
In his turn, Prime Minister Ciuca appreciated that this approach is a „recognition of the value that the Romanian community brings to Spain”.
