Prime minister Ilie Bolojan on Friday had a meeting at the Victoria Palace with the speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, Woo Won-shik, who is currently paying an official visit to Romania, accompanied by an official South Korean delegation.

According to a press release of the government, during the talks, the two high officials emphasised the excellent level of strategic bilateral relations existing between Romania and the Republic of Korea, and also appreciated the expansion of cooperation in various sectors, especially in areas such as nuclear energy for civil use and the defence industry.

On the same occasion, they mentioned the project to refurbish Unit 1 of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant, one of the strategic objectives through which Romania consolidates its role as a regional leader in the field of nuclear energy.

Prime minister Bolojan welcomed the involvement of the South Korean company Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. in this major project, along with partners from Canada and Italy, the same source states. The contract, worth 1.9 billion euros, represents a concrete example of the economic partnership between Romania and the Republic of Korea in areas with high added value.

At the same time, the head of the Executive highlighted Romania’s objective to stimulate economic and trade exchanges with the Republic of Korea. He also underscored the interest of the Romanian authorities in attracting new South Korean investments in priority projects in areas of common interest.

The meeting took place in a year of particular significance, in which Romania and the Republic of Korea mark 35 years of diplomatic relations.

The two states are linked by a Strategic Partnership, launched in 2008 and strengthened by the adoption of the Joint Declaration on the consolidation of the Strategic Partnership, signed in 2024.
