Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan held a meeting on Monday at Victoria Palace with Nadia Comaneci, a legend of national and international sport, and Mihai Covaliu, President of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, to discuss preparations for the celebration of the „Nadia Comaneci Year” in 2026 and the gala dedicated to the unparalleled gymnast, which will take place on 29 May next year.

„Nadia Comaneci, a legend of national and international sport, and Mihai Covaliu, President of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, were this evening the guests of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and Deputy Prime Minister Tánczos Barna. The meeting, held in the Prime Minister’s office at Victoria Palace, focused on the preparations being made for the celebration of the ‘Nadia Comaneci Year’ in 2026 and for the Gala dedicated to the unparalleled gymnast, scheduled for 29 May next year. Discussions also included the organisation of gymnastics competitions, sporting and educational events, and the launch of a documentary dedicated to Nadia Comaneci,” according to a Government press release.

In the context of the meeting with the multiple Olympic champion, the Head of Government conveyed a message underlining the significance of the Romanian gymnast’s achievements.

„In the collective memory of Romanian society, the name Nadia Comaneci has made history over the past 50 years. The results of her work and the performances she achieved have inspired and will continue to inspire,” said Prime Minister Bolojan.

He added that the Government would provide all necessary support for the organisation of the events.

„Encouraging children and young people to take up sport was another topic discussed at the meeting at Victoria Palace,” the press release also reads.

According to the source, the year 2026 has been designated as the „Nadia Comaneci Year” by Law no. 130/2025, marking 50 years since the historic moment in Montreal, in order to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of the Romanian gymnast.

„The Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee has been designated by law as the coordinating institution for all activities carried out in 2026, and will develop a calendar of sporting and educational events which will be sent to national authorities, diplomatic missions, and Romanian representations operating in other countries. According to the law, Parliament, the Presidential Administration, the Government, local public administration authorities, as well as public institutions under their subordination or coordination may allocate funds from their own budgets or from other sources, in accordance with the law, to organise or provide logistical and/or financial support for sporting, cultural, artistic, educational events, or promotional programmes,” the Government press release also reads.
