PM Bolojan: Next week we are making a decision related to the minimum salary

Published on

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan on Wednesday evening stated that a decision will be made next week regarding the minimum salary level for 2026 and that an emergency ordinance will be adopted in this regard.

The Prime Minister told B1Tv private television broadcaster that his personal option would be to maintain the minimum salary at this year’s level.

His clarifications come after Wednesday’s meeting of the National Tripartite Council for Social Dialogue with representatives of trade unions, the Government and employers’ associations.

„There are two options: to increase the minimum salary or to keep the salary for next year the same as we have it this year, in the context in which public sector salaries have been capped. None of these solutions, however, brings only advantages and disadvantages. Each solution has certain positive and some negative effects,” said the PM.

In this regard, he argued that if an employee has a minimum salary, then he is directly impacted by any price increase, which means that the increase in income would provide him with protection. On the other hand, representatives of employers’ associations stated that entire sectors are „at the limit” of profitability, and in the context of the economic contraction, the increase in the minimum salary risks generating a cut in the number of jobs.

„So, in order to be able to consider all these, I’ve reached the conclusion that it will be better to make the decision next week between the two divergent positions, one supported by the trade unions, and the other by the employers, so that before the holidays we can have an ordinance that clarifies which rule will apply next year. As far as I am concerned, given the economic constraints we have, with all the arguments on one side or the other, my personal option is to support maintaining the minimum salary at this year’s level, because in this way we avoid some complications that are given both by the salary caps in the public sector, but also by the economic realities in certain sectors,” Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan also mentioned.

Establishing the level of the minimum gross basic salary guaranteed for next year was the main topic of the consultations held on Wednesday, at the Victoria Palace, between representatives of the Government and those of the social partners, within the meeting of the National Tripartite Council for Social Dialogue.
