PM Ciolacu on Romanian Police Day: Romania is one of the safest countries in its region

Published on

Romania is one of the safest countries in its region thanks to the professionalism and involvement of the Romanian Police and the Ministry of Interior, prime minister Marcel Ciolacu stated on Tuesday, while attending an event dedicated to the celebration of Romanian Police Day.

„I am happy to be with you today, on this holy day of the Annunciation, to celebrate together 203 years of existence of the Romanian Police, an essential institution of the Romanian state. This day of great spiritual significance is closely linked to your daily activity in the service of citizens. The hope and joy of the Annunciation actually means the hope and joy that someone is always there, to offer us protection and safety. Protection and safety for our children, for our families, so that the life of every Romanian citizen can be free and without fear,” stated Marcel Ciolacu.

He pointed out that Romania is „a safe country, a country where you can go out at night without fear.”

„It is the first thing that a foreigner who comes to visit us notices. It is something for which we are praised and set an example in the major European capitals. It is something that any Romanian who goes abroad, whether for work or for a simple visit or on vacation, notices. However, this safety is not a given. The safety that we, Romanians, enjoy is the result of the sustained work of tens of thousands of people in uniform,” said Ciolacu.

He highlighted that last year the Romanian Police proved „a remarkable response capacity, with almost a million interventions and over 130,000 conflicts resolved.”

The head of the Executive also gave assurances that the Government will continue to support the modernisation of the Romanian Police structures.

In this context, he thanked the police for their efforts in combating drug trafficking and asked them to continue to prove that Romania does not tolerate this scourge.

„Over a tonne of high-risk drugs and hundreds of thousands of pills confiscated in 2024 mean lives saved, especially among our young people,” said Ciolacu.

He appreciated the efforts of the Romanian Police in combating illegal migration, emphasising that this phenomenon decreased „by over 80%” in 2024.

„Romania has proven that it is prepared to ensure a high level of security both at the borders and within the country. Moreover, through your work, you have shown Europe and the whole world that Romania is a reliable partner in protecting the external borders of the European Union,” Ciolacu said.
