PM Ciolacu, political parties continuing talks on presidential election date

Published on

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, the national leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), is continuing this morning his consultations with the political parties on a date for the presidential and parliamentary elections.

He announced last Friday that he would invite the leaders of the political parties to discuss the calendar of the presidential election, arguing that „squabbling” on this issue affects the trust between the political partners and must stop.

Attending the talks on Monday were officials of the Save Romania Union (USR), the Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (AUR), the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), SOS Romania, the national minorities group in the Chamber of Deputies and the Social Liberal Humanist Party (PUSL). Consultations continue today with REPER and the Right Force.

The USR delegation said that it wants the law to be obeyed and the elections held on schedule, according to USR national leader Elena Lasconi.

AUR national leader George Simion said that his party was ready for a presidential election on September 15, but Ciolacu „was fooled again”, „seems captive to vested interests” and is considering December.

UDMR Senate floor leader Cseke Attila said that UDMR supports the separation of the presidential election from the parliamentary election and that October should be set as the date for the presidential election.

National leader of SOS Romania Party Diana Sosoaca said that she suggested that the presidential election be held on November 10, the first round, and November 24, the second round, and the parliamentary election should be held on December 8.

PUSL voiced support for the presidential election being held on September 15 and 29, according to chair of the party’s Executive Bureau Graziela Gavrilescu.

Gathered on Monday in a meeting, PNL’s National Political Bureau unanimously agreed that the presidential election should take place on schedule, namely in November, according to the party’s national leader Nicolae Ciuca.

Ciolacu said that, given the incumbent PNL-PSD government coalition, it was not necessary to invite PNL to consultations.
