Romania must support both resolutions proposed at the UN, the one by the US and the one by the EU member states, regarding the end of the war in Ukraine, prime minister Marcel Ciolacu stated on Monday.
„There will be a meeting, including today, I believe, and we will have the stand of the European Union, we will see the approach regarding the reconstruction of Ukraine. I said it before and I will say it again: we cannot talk about a durable peace without the involvement of Romania’s strategic partner, the United States. It is normal that both the US and EU position themselves considering each others’ standpoint, because we are part of a mechanism. I am firmly convinced that in the coming period we will all see that the approaches are, in fact, common. There are two resolutions proposed, a resolution by the United States in the Security Council and a resolution that the European Union, the member countries of the European Union, will propose in the plenary of the UN General Assembly and, yes, you will see, Romania, from my point of view, will have to support both resolutions, because they say the same thing. We are in a moment of repositioning, in a moment of negotiations and at this moment to enter and take the side of some or others is a mistake, it would be a mistake in approaching Romania’s foreign policy,” said Ciolacu.
The PM underscored that Romania does not have to choose between the European Union and the United States.
„Romania has a strategic partnership with the United States and will respect it. If we talk about Romania’s security, then we will respect this partnership, and I am one of those who respect this partnership. To pretend that nothing happened, to pretend that there were no sums of money directed by who knows what personality of modern or non-modern America, means that, once again, we are pretending to hide the truth. I am one of the guarantors of the solidity of the partnership with the United States, but also with the European Union. We must not choose between the European Union and the United States. Such an approach would be a huge mistake. Romania cannot develop without European funds and without the European Union. We have given 30 billion and we have received 100 billion so far. Truly, we must be more efficient in the next period to recover the gaps. We cannot talk about Romania’s security without NATO membership and without the Strategic Partnership with the United States,” Ciolacu said, in a dialogue with journalists, after participating in the General Assembly of the Association of Communes in Romania.
