Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced on Thursday that following the promulgation of the law on the EU minimum wage, the „final step” can be taken to increase Romania’s minimum wage to RON 4,050 as of January 1, noting that there are no electoral or other kind of hindrances to this move.

„I am glad that the activity of the government of Romania was not affected by this electoral campaign and I would like to thank all my colleagues, members of the government. As a matter of fact, the government is going about its work normally and pursues its priorities, one of which is the increase of employee incomes. Now that the law on the introduction of the European minimum wage has been promulgated we can take the final step towards increasing the minimum wage to RON 4,050 as of January 1,” Ciolacu said at the beginning of the government meeting.

He also remarked that there is a European trend regarding salary increases Romania is an active part to.

On Wednesday, President Klaus Iohannis signed into law the bill that sets in place a new mechanism for establishing the minimum wage level, according to the provisions of Directive (EU) 2022/2041 of the European Parliament and of the Council of October 19, 2022 on adequate minimum wages in the European Union.

The piece of legislation includes regulations for ensuring a new mechanism for establishing the minimum wage level. Employees benefit from a minimum wage protection, in the form of a legal minimum wage or in the form of decent wages and working conditions established under collective labor contracts, collective bargaining agreements or other written agreements.
