PM Ciolacu says European commissioner nomination after portfolio negotiation

Published on

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced on Thursday that Romania’s nomination for the post of European commissioner will be made after the negotiations on the distribution of portfolios in the new EU executive are concluded.

„It is a negotiation process. I am not negotiating with the Commission President on deficit issues in the context of the nomination of the European Commissioner. At this moment, of course, I am also talking to the other political leaders, we are trying to negotiate the best portfolio and the most representative for Romania,” explained Ciolacu when asked by journalists on Romania’s nomination for European Commissioner.

Marcel Ciolacu said the proposal could be a woman or a man, whoever is more suited for the position.

Replying to a journalist’s question, according to whom, in the context of the announcement of his candidacy for the presidency, the non-finalisation of the negotiations for the post of European commissioner would show that „he cannot impose himself externally,” Prime Minister Ciolacu said: „I believe that my duty towards Romanians is to obtain the best portfolio for Romania, the persons are always a secondary thing. We have solutions for all the 27 (portfolios) so far.”
