PM Ciolacu says talks with British counterpart focused mainly on security and economy

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said on Wednesday that talks at his meeting in London with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer focused mainly on security and the economic area.

„I would like to tell you that the UK accommodates the largest community of Romanian expats. (. ..) Together with the Foreign Affairs Ministry, with Mrs. Ambassador, we are preparing for the new rules the Romanians living, working or studying in Great Britain will have to meet due to the Brexit. From my point of view, politics will continue to predominantly be about security and economy. These are the European priorities in the coming years and, last but not least, Romania’s priorities as well, and I believe that they should also be the priorities of the future president and of the future government of Romania,” the prime minister told a press conference at the Romanian Cultural Institute in London.

He mentioned that the British prime minister told him that the local Romanian community is highly respected by the British authorities.

„We will initiate some agreements regarding the import of traditional products so high in demand by the Romanian community, they are not of major commercial significance, but they are significant for the Romanians and for strengthening our national identity in Great Britain. We also had talks on renewable energy and even nuclear energy. Also, we discussed the fact that we need security in the Black Sea region and you know that we have already bought two mine-clearing vessels for the Black Sea. One has been delivered and is already operating. We have a very good relationship in the area of intelligence, as Mr. Prime Minister also said, and this will continue,” Ciolacu stated.
