Prime minister Marcel Ciolacu, PSD (Social Democratic Party), chair on Monday stated that, at this point, the solution for the office of president of Romania is Crin Antonescu, in order to avoid Romania entering „an adventure”.
„We are entering a different rhythm and a different dynamic. If somehow it occurs to us that Romania can develop without European funds, without the European Union, especially in these two years, I tell you, from all perspectives, financial, political, all perspectives regarding the security of this country, it is out of the question. That is why, without any reservations, I have come before you today with Crin Antonescu, the proposal of the governing alliance for the office of president of Romania. We all know what happened last year. (…) I believe that, first and foremost, I was wrong and tried to convey what I do as prime minister, believing that is also the profile of the future president of Romania. I was wrong. And I have to learn, and so do you. Today, we have before us a man who truly has the profile of the president of Romania,” said Ciolacu, at the General Assembly of the Association of Communes in Romania.
He urged the representatives of the rural towns present at the meeting to explain to the citizens they represent the „truth,” so that Romania does not end up entering „an adventure.”
„I know the surprise you had when you watched the first round of the presidential elections, especially in rural areas, and you saw a huge difference between what you were talking to the citizens and the vote. I want to tell you that this time you no longer have to be passive. This time, you have to go to the people and you have to explain the truth to them. The truth is that, if we do not continue on the path we have started at this moment, Romania is entering an adventure. It is not our adventure. It is an adventure created by us, but it is an adventure that will have costs on our families, on our children and on our grandchildren (…) The truth, however, at this time, (…) is that we have no other solution at this moment for the office of president of Romania than Crin Antonescu,” claimed Marcel Ciolacu.
The candidate of the governing coalition in the presidential election, Crin Antonescu, conveyed to the local elected officials that Romania still needs development.
„We have presidential elections that are the key to Romania’s development in the coming years. (…) I thank the three parties that honored me with the proposal to be this alliance’s candidate for the Presidency of Romania. (…) I responded to this and committed myself to this mission completely convinced that I can fight this battle, together with most of you, and especially that I can serve a term as president of Romania in the coming years, in a difficult period, the likes of which we have never had before, after 1990 or after 2000, in any case. This is not only about the election of the president, after all, this is about what the president together with the Parliament, the Government, the central and local administration, will do in the coming years, it’s about major options for Romania. It’s about deciding whether we continue everything that has been done well in this country, whether we have the capacity to reform what needs to be reformed in this country and whether we have the power to continue a path that Romania has begun and which it cannot abandon without the risk of losing its identity, solidity, position and guarantees as a country in the civilized world,” Antonescu said.
