PM Ilie Bolojan on PSD possibly leaving the Government: I hope we won’t have such a situation

Published on

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan voiced hope that the Social Democratic Party (PSD) will not leave the Government, in the context of recent tensions generated by the different standpoints of the coalition partners regarding the official ceremonies dedicated to former President Ion Iliescu and underscored that political stability is crucial for Romania, especially in the current economic and social context.

„I hope we won’t deal with such a situation and I believe all of us in government are aware of the country’s current state, and an important indicator by which a country is judged is also related to the political stability. Because political stability means predictability when making decisions, it means the ability to actually implement them and it means long-term policies, it means normality and development opportunities. Knowing the reality, these parties made up the coalition aiming to correct aspects, thus the part about stability is very important,” Ilie Bolojan stated on Sunday evening at the Antena 3 private television station.

The PM admitted that in a coalition made up of four parties and supported by the minorities group, harmonizing positions is sometimes difficult, but he pointed out that responsibility is needed to move the country forward.

„In any coalition of four parties, plus the minorities group, it’s never easy to harmonize things because the parties have different histories, different positions over these years, but beyond that, the problems of our country are so serious that if what truly brought us into politics was the desire to do good for our country, now is the time to prove it, because this is no longer about taking sides on one issue or another, it’s simply about the responsibility to move the country forward,” Bolojan showed.

Regarding the PSD’s criticism in terms of the austerity measures, which the Social Democrats argue that were adopted without consultation, the Prime Minister rejected these claims.

„You should know that all the drafts which were proposed, both those in package 1 and those in package 2, were discussed. They are part of the governing programme, as it stands as a document, thus, from this point of view, there is no discussion related to the fact that these measures were not discussed. We discuss them periodically, but that doesn’t mean the parties’ approaches on one issue or another are identical. Yes, every time the coalition parties have proposals on various aspects, I always try to see how that point of view can be integrated into the overall draft, so that we can take the good ideas from each party and put them into practice,” Prime Minister Bolojan also said.
