PNL asks election authority to rule on bill allowing President Iohannis’ parliamentary candidacy

Published on

The National Liberal Party (PNL) has asked the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) to rule on a bill that would allow President Klaus Ioannis to run in this year’s general election while still in office.

According to PNL, the request was made based on an opinion of the Legislative Council on the bill.

Consequently, the PNL will not put on the agenda of the Senate’s Standing Bureau meeting a debate on the bill pending an answer from BEC.

PNL MPs Daniel Fenechiu and Gabriel Andronache submitted last Wednesday to Parliament a legislative proposal that provides that the President of Romania can run in a general election in the last three months of the presidential term of office as an independent on the lists of a party or alliances in the parliamentary elections. The bill amends Article 52 of the law on the election to the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
