Poisoning case of former Minister of Forestry Doina Pana, closed

Published on

The Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) prosecutors closed the case in which the former Minister of Forestry, Doina Pana, claimed that she was poisoned, after the investigation carried out by the Forensic Medical Investigation Institute (INML) established that she was not poisoned with mercury, but possibly only „exposed” to mercury with reduced values, following the ingestion of some foods, according to Agerpres.

„Her life was not put in danger”, is another conclusion of a doctor from INML.

In January 2018, Doina Pana resigned from the position of Minister of Forestry, citing that she had health problems and complained that she had been poisoned with mercury, pointing to the „wood industry mafia” as possible culprits.

However, the evidence collected by the DIICOT did not confirm the claims of the former minister.

At the same time, the INML considers that, probably, Doina Pana was exposed to low levels of mercury, possibly as a result of „modern food”.

According to the INML, the foods on the market that contain mercury and that can cause the symptoms complained of by Doina Pana are: fish, seafood, cereals, fruits, meat from animals that were fed with mercury-contaminated cereals.

The DIICOT says that there is no evidence regarding the existence of an organized criminal group, made up of members of ASFOR – the Association of Foresters in Romania, to have planned the murder of the former minister of forestry.
