POT accuses Chamber leaders of blocking president suspension procedure

Published on

The Party of Young People (POT) accuses the presidents of both Chambers of Parliament, Ciprian Serban and Ilie Bolojan, of blocking the procedure for the suspension of President Klaus Iohannis, claiming that they refuse to respect the legislative body’s rules.

„The Party of Young People strongly condemns the unjustified delay of the legislative initiative to suspend Iohannis. The presidents of Parliament, Ciprian Serban and Ilie Bolojan, refuse to respect the joint session rules (which provide a specific deadline) and are looking for illegal reasons to delay the suspension,” POT said in a press release issued on Thursday.

POT Chairwoman Anamaria Gavrila is quoted in the press release as saying that „Ilie Bolojan and Ciprian Serban are actually blocking the will of the Romanian people.”

She asked Ilie Bolojan and Ciprian Serban what the reason was for delaying the procedure.

„Romanians want Klaus Iohannis to be dismissed and the second round, back!,” POT further said.

On January 16, the Party of Young People announced that 161 POT, Alliance for Romanians’ Union (AUR), and SOS parliamentarians had signed for the suspension of President Klaus Iohannis, and the signatures were submitted to the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. On January 22, Ilie Bolojan said that the request to suspend the head of state was a „publicity stunt” and „irrational,” given that the necessary signatures were only submitted to the Chamber of Deputies and not to the Senate.
